Planning A Small Kitchen

Every apartment, no matter how small, needs a kitchen. But what do you have to bear in mind when planning a kitchen? What do you have to consider when planning a small kitchen? We have planning tips for you on how to make your little kitchen a big success!

To think up high

If you are planning a small kitchen, remember that you have little space in the width. But in the height! Kitchen cabinets that end with the ceiling of the room visually enlarge and offer a lot of storage space. There is a large selection of different cabinet heights and many planning options to make the most of the available space. For example, two wall cabinets can be placed one above the other. If these are also fitted with glass doors and illuminated, they visually enlarge the room and make the kitchen appear bright and friendly.

Plan dishwasher

Now you’re probably asking yourself why you should plan on space for a dishwasher in a kitchen that is already far too small anyway. It’s quite simple: the dishwasher does take up some space inside the kitchen unit but just think how much space the dirty dishes take up. You need your work surface to work, not to collect dishes. A small dishwasher is just 45 cm wide and does the washing up almost by itself.

L-shape

With a small kitchen, you often do not have much space for form. But with an L-kitchen or corner kitchen, you should be able to accommodate everything and still have room to cook, cut vegetables and bake. The ideal situation here is when the three most important kitchen areas – refrigeration, cooking, and washing up – are planned close together to save unnecessary travel.

The Kitchen Renovation and How It Works Easily

If your kitchen is slowly but surely becoming a thing of the past, you should think about a kitchen conversion. You are not alone in wanting to renovate your kitchen. In the past few years, structural measures relating to the kitchen have increased significantly. Above all, the use of space has changed a lot in the past decades and is now much more than just a place for cooking and storing food. In the meantime, a kitchen has become an extended living room, a social meeting point, and a popular party location. People like to come together here, but only if the atmosphere is right. Open, inviting, and comfortable – with a modern kitchen renovation you not only bring your appliances into shape but also create a place where everyone feels comfortable

What options are there for kitchen renovation?

If you have decided on a kitchen renovation, a number of questions arise, on the basis of which you have different options for kitchen remodeling:

Does the layout of your kitchen still fit and does the kitchen meet ergonomic requirements, for example? Does the body of your kitchen unit still meet your requirements or does it even have defects?
Are the technical devices still intact or are they getting on in years?
Do you still like floors and wall coverings? Would you like to change the spatial division of furniture and Co. and thus arrange a new arrangement?

Based on your answers, you can only replace individual elements, such as fronts, worktops, and furniture, or give your old kitchen a general overhaul with a kitchen renovation. There are also various utensils in the hardware store, such as grinding tools and modern paints, which make DIY kitchen renovations quick and easy. This is also the cheapest variant of a kitchen conversion.

Tip: Use light colors and set stylish accents with wood. Install new handles or use kitchen films with modern designs to bring a breath of fresh air into the room. A splash guard made of glass behind your stove is elegant and functional at the same time.

If, on the other hand, you want to give your kitchen a completely new look, there is a large kitchen renovation in the house, which should be well prepared and calculated.

The glass rear wall mirror, for example, can be attached quickly and easily to existing tiles and gives your kitchen landscape a fresh touch. Integrated lighting provides the finishing touches to the kitchen remodeling, which perfectly sets the scene in your kitchen.

Kitchen remodeling with new appliances

In addition to the visual changes such as changing the worktop or adding small details, you can also integrate new appliances when renovating the kitchen. Both the sink and electrical appliances can be part of the renovation in your fitted kitchen.

Kitchen remodeling: 5 tips to make this task easier

If you are remodeling the kitchen, it is important to plan this carefully. This is the only way to ensure that the result afterwards corresponds exactly to your wishes. It is not only necessary to make sure that the room looks appealing afterwards. A practical and functional facility is also of great importance here. This is very important in order to do the kitchen work with high efficiency. Careful planning also helps you decide which work steps you will take on yourself.

If you lend a hand yourself, you can significantly reduce the costs of the renovation work. However, assembling the kitchen is not an easy task, so it is important to think carefully about what work you will be doing.

The following five tips will help you plan and implement your kitchen remodeling.

Try out different positioning forms when remodeling the kitchen
The first planning step is always to measure the space precisely. If you intend to break out walls as part of the renovation work in order to create an open transition, you should also consider the desired dimensions in your plan. You can then make a true-to-scale drawing of the room and this is where you can place the kitchen furniture. There are several options. For example, you can arrange the furniture in an L-shape, a U-shape or a G-shape. Another option is to install a single kitchenette. In addition, you can install two separate kitchenettes on two opposite walls. A particularly appealing solution is to design a kitchen island. However, you should make sure that this requires a comparatively large amount of space. Now you can insert the individual arrangement forms into your plan. This allows you to try out different options and see how they will work in your home. Always make sure to avoid bottlenecks. These can make kitchen work more difficult – especially if you like to cook with several people. Instead of using pencil and paper to create the plan, you can use a kitchen planner; many furniture stores offer such a tool online. It goes without saying that they intend to sell their own fitted kitchens. But you can use it to try out various positioning forms without obligation. Since these kitchen planners usually also allow a 3D view, you can see particularly well how the corresponding arrangement looks.
Kitchen remodeling: creating zones for more efficient kitchen work
When remodeling the kitchen, be sure to divide the space into different zones. This ensures that you can do the kitchen work much faster later. For example, when you prepare the food, you usually do this on the worktop. You will need chopping boards, knives and some other utensils for this. So that these are always ready to hand, they should be kept near the worktop. The way to the refrigerator and other food supplies should also be as short as possible, so that you only need a little time to get the ingredients you need. The appliances and utensils that you use for cooking, however, should be located in a different zone. It is recommended that the cabinets for pots, pans and cooking utensils be installed right next to the stove. Another zone is provided for cleaning and disposal. The sink, dishwasher, detergents and cleaning supplies and the trash can should all be in the same area.

High instead of wide: This is how you provide the required storage space
In order to achieve a modern design when converting the kitchen, the homeowners often remove partition walls from the living and dining areas. When there are fewer walls, however, there are also fewer options for putting up kitchen cabinets. This often leads to a shortage of available storage space. You can solve this problem by using taller cabinets than before – preferably up to the ceiling. The items stored here are still easily accessible with a stepladder.
Fronts, worktops, wall paint: ensure a harmonious overall picture
The next planning step is to select a suitable design. The fronts of modern fitted kitchens are available in many different colors. There are also many options with regard to the materials for the worktop – from solid stone slabs to natural wood and plastic surfaces. When buying the wall colors, the fittings, the sink, and the handles of the kitchen cabinets, you can also choose from many different colors and materials. So think carefully about how you want to design this room and then ensure a coherent overall picture.
Reusing old fitted kitchens: How to save on kitchen remodeling
A new fitted kitchen is very expensive. However, it is often possible to reuse old furniture. You have to be very careful when doing this. First, you need to dismantle the individual pieces of furniture. Always keep parts that belong together and put small parts such as screws and hinges in a bag with a corresponding label. That makes it a lot easier later. Put the furniture back together. In addition, you should note that kitchen assembly is a difficult task that only skilled DIY enthusiasts should perform.

The Classic Kitchen Design VS. Modern Kitchens

The classic kitchen is just right for those who value timeless design and who are looking above all for a highly functional kitchen that can be easily redesigned. Since the classic fitted kitchen itself is relatively neutral, the appearance can also be changed later. This makes it possible to adapt the kitchen if you want to change the furnishing style or move house. With a new wall color, new kitchen furniture, a new kitchen lamp or decoration ideas you can quickly bring a breath of fresh air into your kitchen.

Features of classic kitchen design

The classic kitchen is characterized by clear lines and rather restrained, harmonizing colors. Typical colors for classic kitchens are white, beige or gray in various shades. Rich decorations like in the country house style or strong contrasts like in modern kitchens are rather rare.

Although the classic kitchen design is not oriented towards the latest kitchen trends, it certainly incorporates long-term trends into the kitchen design. For example, long high-gloss kitchens in white have dominated the range of kitchen manufacturers, but today the ranges increasingly include kitchen designs in a matt look.

Advantages of classic kitchen design

If you don’t attach great importance to extraordinary design, you can actually do everything right with a classic kitchen, but there are hardly any disadvantages. The advantages of classic kitchen are:

– Suited for everyday use

– Timeless

– Easy to redesign or add new elements and furniture

– Large selection of classic style kitchens and kitchen manufacturers

– Prices that suit every purse

Modern kitchens

Modern kitchens are usually found in rather unconventional or design-oriented households. They stand out from the classic style through innovative design solutions and a reduced formal language. Even though modern kitchens usually create a cooler atmosphere than, for example, the country house kitchen, they can also be just as well suited as a living room kitchen or family kitchen.

Features of the modern kitchen

The line between modern kitchens and designer kitchens is sometimes not clear, both are characterized by clear forms, innovative details and the picking up of the latest kitchen trends. Minimalism is currently setting the tone in modern kitchens: Everything is reduced to the bare essentials, kitchen utensils disappear into drawers and cupboards.

Trend colors in kitchen design, such as the current kitchen in black, are also frequently taken up in modern kitchen designs. Modern kitchens are also often characterized by unusual material combinations or strong color contrasts: For example, a countertop made of natural stone is combined with colored plastic fronts. Or shiny stainless steel meets rough wooden surfaces.

Another popular form is the modern kitchen with cooking island. These offer many practical advantages and are particularly recommendable when an open kitchen adjoins the living room or dining area.

Advantages of modern kitchens

The purchase is primarily a matter of taste. But modern kitchens also have concrete advantages:

– Modern kitchens appear more tidy due to their minimalist design.

– Innovative kitchen solutions and trends may later become the standard.

– Sophisticated kitchen designs are cheap compared to designer kitchens.

Design With Grey Kitchen Cabinets

With kitchen cabinets in grey, you are always in fashion. Whether light or dark shades of grey, you can be sure that you are combining timelessness with discreet design. Read more about the advantages of a kitchen with grey elements here at potomackitchenandbath.com.

Grey stands for boredom and unimaginativeness? Not in the modern kitchens of design lover! Often in kitchens, the color choice falls on a shade of gray, because the color is unobtrusive and comes in countless variations. As a mean value to white and black, grey offers the possibility to individually match the personally preferred lighter or darker tone. A kitchen in grey surfaces is therefore a stylish choice. A further plus: with the help of colored accessories and natural materials, any gray kitchen can be adapted and individualized to taste, trend or mood in no time at all.

Diversity of a grey kitchen

In the wide range of gray, there is a suitable shade for everyone. As a mixture of black and white, a wide range of shades are available from light to dark. From the actual fronts to individual highlights on the kitchen counterops and the floor, everything can be finished in gray. The shape of the kitchen is not important, but you can set accents with bright colors. In addition, you can design individual areas of the kitchen in gray, while highlighting others with colorful patterns or matting.

Grey kitchen cabinets

For the two extremes of white and black, grey is therefore the perfect alternative for those who like things to be discreet and want to keep their kitchen in a neutral color. Whether a soft light gray or anthracite – contrary to the assumption that gray appears expressionless and monotonous, there are almost endless possibilities of color variations. Surfaces made of lacquer can also lend vivid effects to a simple grey. Grey also functions as a restrained color in matt fitted kitchens. In contrast to a black kitchen, the surfaces of the grey variant are easier to maintain, as they do not immediately see every fingerprint on the kitchen fronts.

Avoid Kitchen Planning Errors

Have you decided to plan a large part of your new kitchen (kitchen cabinets, countertops…) yourself? We have put together some important tips for you here to help you avoid kitchen planning errors.

Make sure that there are work surfaces and shelves to the left and right of the hob.

Is the person who works mainly in the kitchen right- or left-handed? The work sequence should be planned accordingly!

The main work surface should be located between the sink and the hob. Ideally, it should be at least 60cm wide in small kitchens and 120cm wide in larger ones.

If you wish to have top cabinets on the countertop, please do not place them in the sink area.

Does the waste container fit into the cabinet provided?

Extendable tables should not be located in the area of the main work surface.

Make sure that door hinges of furniture and appliances are attached in such a way that you have easy access everywhere!

For corner kitchen planning, make sure that all cabinets can be opened easily. This is especially true for any corner cabinet next to an extractor fan. The length and depth of the handles are also important!

Can all drawers be opened easily and without hindrance?

For a perfect result, cabinets, plinths, light or wreath strips and side panels should be exactly matched in color to the front design.

There should be sufficient legroom behind fold-out or pull-out furniture and appliance elements.

Plan storage cabinets for perishable food, as well as refrigerators and freezers, at a sufficient distance from the oven, stove and radiator. Do you install underfloor heating in a new building or when completely renovating? Then take care not to place any heating hammers under the kitchen storage areas.

In the case of cooling appliances, it is essential to ensure the necessary ventilation. For example, in the case of an under-counter refrigerator without plinth ventilation, a ventilation grille must be provided in the countertop. In the case of built-in refrigerators in tall units, the ventilation is normally located in the plinth or in any ceiling panels that may be present.

In the case of a raised countertop, an undermounting plinth must also be ordered for some appliances.

When planning with countertop over-deepness, fitting strips, side panels or correspondingly deep base units are necessary. Please also note that elements above them, such as the hob or extractor fan, may have to be brought forward.

Plan the exhaust air routing for the extractor hood in good time! If you want an open fireplace, you must take care of the supply air, preferably with the help of the responsible chimney sweep. The window circuit for the cooker hood must also be discussed with him, and this must be done before planning and installation!

Think about necessary and desired accessories and plan them in advance. These can include cutlery inserts, niche back panels, light screens, wreath mouldings, ceiling panels, railing rods, waste bins, lighting and lighting accessories. Important: Do not plan any halogen steel in upper and lower shelves!

Kitchen Fronts And Kitchen Countertops

Which kitchen fronts and kitchen countertops are available and what are the advantages and disadvantages of individual types and materials?

The body of a kitchen cabinet consists of two side panels, a bottom panel, a back panel and a top panel and serves as the basic construction for all cabinet shapes. The fronts are attached to the front of the carcass as doors, drawers or pull-outs.

BASIC MATERIALS

MDF boards and chipboards

In addition to chipboard and solid wood, MDF boards are very popular as a base or carrier material for kitchen furniture. The so-called medium-density fibreboards are characterised by their enormous stability and bending strength, are easy to process and are highly valued for their particularly even and smooth surface, especially with lacquered fronts.

How are MDF boards made of wood, adhesives, additives and water produced? The wood fibres are heated strongly under steam pressure, fed into the refiner (defibrator) and ground.

The pulp is then dried and pressed into single-layer boards. Unlike chipboard, the edges and surface are very fine, as the proportion of pores is very low. Immediately after profiling, the MDF board can, for example, be lacquered, covered with foil or with various coatings.

Chipboard is the most widely used material in the kitchen furniture industry. It should be noted that the manufacturer only uses high-quality boards with the E1 limit value requirement. This value indicates the permissible formaldehyde emission and can be checked using the E1 quality seal.

HPL boards

HPL means “High Pressure Laminate” and refers to abrasion-resistant, moisture-resistant, food-safe, heat-resistant up to 180 °C and antistatic laminates. The thickness of the board is between 0.8 and 1.6 mm. They can be manufactured in different colors and structures.

For this purpose, several cellulose sheets are impregnated with curable (thermosetting) synthetic resins and evenly layered. The decorative layer, which consists of a printed or dyed sheet, ensures the desired design. The decorative layer is impregnated in melamine resin and the core layers of the sheet are impregnated with phenolic resin. The layers are then pressed together. After curing, the synthetic resins give the board enormous stability and extreme hardness. The plastic sheets also have a non-porous surface.

Your Kitchen Is The Focal Point Of Your Home

Everyone congregates in the cooking zone for conversation, sneaky bites, and to spend time together. Your counters see a fair amount of use, and they are one of the first things that people see when they enter. If your countertops are covered in cracks, peeling material, dingy surfaces, or chipped areas, then it might be time to get rid of them and have fresh, smooth toppers installed.

Maybe, the material or style is out-of-date, and you want something beautiful to show off; selling your home is often much easier when you replace counters and update the look of rooms like the kitchen and bath. The addition also increases the value of your home letting you recoup most, if not all, of the money you invest in the counters.

We are one of the experienced manufacturers of natural and engineered stone with high quality in Virginia. Specializing in granite, limestone, marble, and quartz that can transform not just your countertops but your fireplaces, and outdoor kitchens.
Contact us or stop by and let us help you change your kitchen from ordinary to extraordinary. .

Improving functionality

If your kitchen is much too busy, cluttered, or hard to maneuver, then it might just be time to rearrange the room and have new Caesarstone quartz or limestone counters installed. These materials need a sealer to protect them from stains and burns, but they are popular choices in new home builds. Many times, homes need rearranging to fit the growth or change in a family. If someone becomes disabled, or new additions require a remodel, then replacing your countertops allows you to rearrange the kitchen to suit your needs better.

Families with several children often benefit from kitchen islands because it provides a separate prep area for cooking meals and space where little ones can sit at the island and be near mom or dad for easy watching, quick morning meals, and family conversations over a late-night snack.

Outdated styles are no fun

When your kitchen is old and not so fashion-friendly, you should consider updating the room with new marble countertops. When you seal the material properly, marble is a durable material that you can use for decades.

Choosing a classic color like white or black lets you set up a timeless design that will boost the value of your home letting you sell it for maximum profit when the counters are properly maintained. The matte finish of some counter materials can change the entire look of the kitchen. Choosing a material that is going to stay in style for a long time is vital if you are planning to sell your home at any point. Sometimes, it is best to save the counter replacement for just before you move out so that you can offer buyers a fresh, clean kitchen that they would be proud to own.

Granite slabs with beautiful veins and striking colors grab the attention of buyers, but so do watermarks, scratches, and bubbles in your stone. When your kitchen is outdated or filled with damaged counters, then you should consider replacing them with an option that is classy, timeless, and durable to give you the most return on your investment. Should you choose to sell your home, new countertops can make or break a sale. People want their kitchen to look and feel spotless, clean, and inviting. Outdated styles and damaged counters turn away potential buyers and make it hard to sell your home. You can get more money for a property that is newly renovated with a modern design.

Structural damage could be harmful in many ways

When your counters are made with stone slabs, they often hold up under tough use, but sometimes these surfaces can crack, chip, peel, break, or stain. Damage to kitchen counters can make the room unsightly, but it can also cause other problems. Granite slabs can scratch and pit when hit with a hard blow from a meat mallet or when cutting meat and vegetables. Pitting can occur causing a hazard for cooks and especially young children. Limestone is a material that can scratch and break away into little particles. Caesarstone quartz is another material that is gaining in popularity because it reflects much of the light produced by fluorescent and LED bulbs, but it requires sealing. When your stone slabs show damage, it may be best to replace them before someone gets a cut or scratch from a jagged edge.

Stains, water damage, and discoloration

Limestone is one of those materials that are extremely susceptible to stains and discoloration. These counters can be difficult to maintain with water and other liquids causing frequent damage that is hard to remove. Marble countertops pose the same issue. Caesarstone quartz countertops and quartzite countertops can stain as well when they are not properly sealed or resealed on a regular schedule. Unsightly stains can create problems with selling a home. People who want to get the most out of their property can gain more of the home value by replacing marble countertops that look dingy and dirty. Just switching out counters can make a massive difference in home appeal when it comes to selling the house.

How should kitchen planning be?

How should the kitchen be planned to ensure short work paths and thus fast work processes? A sensible kitchen division into different work areas or kitchen zones provides more comfort when working in the kitchen.

The topic of ergonomics is part of today’s service standard in kitchen planning. This term is made up of the Greek words ergon (work, work) and nomos (law, rule) and thus describes the science of the laws of human work. Ergonomics is generally concerned with making the work area human-compatible or adapting the furniture anatomically to the human being.

The central aim of ergonomic considerations is therefore always the creation of ideal working conditions for people, and this naturally plays a special role in the kitchen. Work in a kitchen takes up a large part of the weekly working hours in many homes. Here you work every day, and your back is regularly strained. In order to work effectively and save energy, the kitchen should be customized for the most common user!

What Should You Pay Attention To When Planning Your Kitchen?

If the kitchen is planned according to ergonomic criteria, the “kitchen user health” can be taken care of. On top of that, routine work processes such as preparing food or dishwashing are simplified, which makes for more efficient work. In addition to the correct body posture, a clear kitchen design also contributes to well-being. If important ergonomic aspects such as the optimum kitchen countertop height are not taken into account during the planning stage, incorrect posture or overloading of the spine can lead to back problems, among other things.

General Ergonomic Tips To Make Kitchen Work Easier

Change your position more often during kitchen work. For example, when cleaning vegetables or peeling potatoes, briefly put the cutting tool to one side and move, lengthen or stretch. Lack of exercise can cause back or neck problems. Staying in an often inappropriate posture is a one-sided burden.

For longer activities, it is recommended to adopt a sitting position. Cutting work, for example, is much less straining in a seated position than standing. If there is enough space available in the kitchen, a planned seated workplace provides additional comfort.

For highly-planned kitchens, you should always have a small ladder that is safe to step on. This can be stowed away in the plinth or sink base cabinet. In this way, even utensils stored high up are easily accessible.
